Scientific framework and objectives

This PhD thesis, which started in 2015, is funded by the China Scholarship Council. It is supervised by Anetta Kopecka (Lyon2, Lyon) and co-supervised by Christine Lamarre (Inalco, Paris). The thesis is carried out within the framework of the cross-linguistic project Deixis dynamique of the Federation TUL (CNRS) and of the axe DiLis in the laboratory DDL. It focuses on a typological description of motion events in Standard Chinese. The main objective of this thesis is to study how speakers of Standard Chinese conceptualize motion in space, with a special focus on the expression of PATH (directionality of movement: source/medium/goal) and DYNAMIC DEIXIS (perspective with respect to a viewpoint: centripetal/centrifugal/transversal). More specifically, the thesis focuses on: (1) the types of constructions used for expressing spontaneous and caused motion events; (2) the expression of DYNAMIC DEIXIS and the factors (e.g., data types, motion types, etc.) that may play a role in the expression of the viewpoint; (3) the conceptualization of different spatiotemporal portions and the phenomena of the asymmetry in the expression of PATH and DYNAMIC DEIXIS. Two types of data are used to carry out the study: (1) descriptive data, which is collected in China by using visual stimuli « Put & Take » (Bowerman, Gullberg, Majid, Narasimhan, 2004), « Trajectoire » (Ishibashi, Kopecka, Vuillermet, 2006), and (2) dialogical data, which is extracted from the TV series « Married for ten years » (2002), « Loquacious Zhang Damin’s happy life » (1998).
