Scientific framework and objectives

Languages vary both in the type of lexical and grammatical tools they use to describe motion, but also in the type of semantic elements they lexicalize in these tools. This project aims to examine the variation between and within languages in the expression of Path and Manner of motion, with a particular focus on Romance and Slavic languages. The two main objectives of this project are (1) to analyze the typological changes that have taken place during the evolution of a language in the process of lexicalization of Path and Manner and the relationship between form and meaning, and (2) to understand how the typological characteristics and the type of constructions (satellite- vs. verb-framed) used to describe motion influence the type of spatial information encoded.
