The phonology of Yukuna: Some descriptive issues

This talk aims to give an overview of the phonology of Yukuna, a North Amazonian Arawak language of Colombia. After presenting the segment inventories and phonotactics of the language, I will focus on three main unresolved issues of its phonology: i. vowel glottalization, ii. vowel nasalization, and iii. tonal contrasts. For each issue, I will present different possible synchronic analyses: i. vowel glottalization as a segmental or as a suprasegmental feature, ii. vowel nasalization as phonemic or non-phonemic, and lastly, iii. the tonal system as “privative” (H vs. Ø) or as equipollent (H vs. L) (Hyman 2010). Their respective dis/advantages will be discussed from a broader Amazonian typological perspective.

ven.

Workshop international ‘Triggers of Language Change in the Language Sciences’
Grand Amphithéâtre de l'Université Lyon 2

The conference is part of the "X in the Language Sciences" (XLanS) series which aims to bring a wide range of researchers together to focus on a particular topic in language that interests them. The goal is to identify the crucial issues and connect them with cutting-edge techniques in order to develop better explanations of linguistic phenomena (see details of the first XLanS conference here).

This year's topic is 'triggers of change': What causes a sound system or lexicon or grammatical system to change? How can we explain rapid changes followed by periods of stability? Can we predict the direction and rate of change according to external influences?

Invited speakers:

  • Michael C. Gavin (Colorado State University)
  • Olivier Morin (Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History)
  • Monica Tamariz (Heriot Watt University)
  • Sarah Thomason (University of Michigan)
  • Brigitte Pakendorf (University of Lyon)
  • Márton Sóskuthy (University of York)

Apprehensive in Baoding
Na Song (INALCO)
ISH, A. Frossard

Apprehensive modality is a kind of modality that combines epistemic and attitudinal modality (Lichtenberk 1995:293). More precisely, it concerns the judgement of undesirable possibility (Verstraete 2015 :224). As a category apprehensive has not received much attention cross-linguistically up to now, yet several studies are dedicated to it. e.g. Amazonian languages (Ese ejja, Vuillermet to appear) and Australian languages (Angelo & Schultze-Berndt 2016:255-296, Verstraete 2015 :223- 268) etc. This paper focuses on the apprehensive expressed by a sentence-final enclitic particle lɛ.ja in Baoding dialect, a Mandarin dialect of the Sinitic group, spoken 140 km south of Beijing. As for apprehensive domain, besides some modal words as found in Standard Mandarin (Gao 2003), Baoding employs a grammaticalized form, the sentence-final enclitic particle lɛ.ja. It has two main functions: firstly, lɛ.ja has a temporal and epistemic function, which indicates an imminent future event; another extended function is apprehensive, denoting a potential imminent event considered as undesirable. We first discuss the predicates that co-occur with lɛ.ja and the reading they trigger. We also investigate how a possible source of the particle and how both functions may be related. Then we focus on the interaction between the apprehensive particle and polar question in Baoding. We conclude by resuming the semantic features of lɛ.ja and argue that contrary to previous opinions of considering apprehensive as a special form of a command (Aikhenvald 2010: 225-226), in the case of Baoding, apprehensive sentences may have a first person as its subject in a declarative sentence.
